Mini Cooper S R56

A petrolhead’s first car always is a big deal, because since we were small we want to do nothing else than be around cars and drive them. Fast, slow, to the grocery store and to the best roads there are. It all starts with wanting a car to do all the stuff we dream as as kids. Then the day comes where we actually decide to get one. We look at various cars we definitely can’t afford, and after realising that, we settle on something sensible that still meets our needs.

Many would say that size doesn’t really matter when in fact it does. Driving around in a VW Polo the past few days proved me right once again. Small cars are just better than big cars for one simple reason. Weight. Everyone saying otherwise doesn’t know shit about good cars or doesn’t understand basic physics. No matter how incredibly well-engineered a big car is, it will always be superior to a good small car when driven properly. The new Polo GTI proves this point as it currently is VW’s hottest hatchback available.

Cupra Formentor VZ5

This time around I review an SUV I actually like! „But the last reviews you inherently told us that you hate SUVs“. Yes I did and I still do. I make absolutely no sense at all and don‘t really care if I do because the Formentor sort of won my heart the moment I saw one in the flesh. It‘s arguably one of the best looking smaller SUVs / Crossovers on the market right now and a rather brilliant one to drive too. Basically a „budget friendly“, RS3-ish SUV that can do many things very good.

Renault Mégane e-Tech

The last few reviews have been very EV based, so why break the streak? I personally like EVs. There. I said it. I don’t care if die-hard petrolheads start chasing me down the road wielding pitchforks and torches, angrily yelling “blasphemy!”. Embracing change never is a bad thing and experiencing what EVs are capable of, makes me appreciate them more and more. This time, I wanted to try something that is not based on the Volkswagen MEB platform. So I nicely asked Renault if I could have a go in their new Mégane e-Tech. A car I actually didn’t know much about, except that it looks rather brilliant and might be a great EV to consider.

Once again I had the pleasure to drive around in one of the latest hot hatchbacks available and this time it was an electric one. So let’s see! Right off the start, I can definitely say that it looks incredibly hot. It’s sort of the cooler brother of the ID3. You know, the one who always dresses in the latest fashion trends and is the fun one at parties.

When reviewing a car, I love to primarily find out about its driving dynamics and overall experience. So I usually take a fun car on a good piece of road to find out. Testing a luxurious big electric SUV is something else for me, so I had to come up with a plan. What I decided on doing was rather simple as I did sort of everything a Q4 user would do. Go to work, get some stuff in the back and have a small trip somewhere just for fun.

VW Golf R MK8

I don’t really see the point of writing a completely new review about a car that’s basically the same one I reviewed last. Or is it? The MK 8 Golf R is the newest flagship Golf that comes in a lovely blue color. The ultimate R car for many. In terms of looks, I have to admit that the MK8 styling finally grew on me and I can finally say that it’s a gorgeous looking car when specced right. When I try to compare to the GTI it looks very similar. That similar that I had to check on google for the main differences. There are some. But they’re very subtle.

In this year’s review, I drive around in the newest version of the OG hot hatchback. The VW Golf GTI. Back in the days when men had silly haircuts, Volkswagen created the world’s first hot hatchback as we know it today. The idea was rather simple. Take your normal Golf and smack a more powerful engine from an Audi in it. Et voilà. Born was the usable, small, fun daily.

I won’t start again by telling you how much I hate SUVs because it would just result in a 1000 word rant. I don’t really care for them and view them as an unnecessary waste of precious resources. But when Volkswagen asks if you want to have a go in their 460HP Touareg R you don’t say no, do you?

I set myself a few goals for 2020. Little did anyone know that a global pandemic would change our daily lives drastically and that 2020 would become a very special year to say the least. Nonetheless, one goal I set myself was to drive at least one supercar, and when I received an invitation by my local Ferrari dealer to be a part of the Ferrari F8 Tributo test drives, I didn’t hesitate for long.

I usually don’t try to judge people on a certain behaviour or attitude towards some things. Reality is, I do and you do too. And even though we judge them, we still tolerate a lot of stuff because we don’t want to be rude. But, there are exceptions. One of these are people who use their zodiac sign as an excuse for being the way they are, and the other insufferable oaks are petrolheads who just hate electric cars “cuz it ain’t a V8”.

Mégane RS Trophy R

Renault has an obsession with the Nurburgring lap time and they just can’t stand it when someone else owns the FWD lap record. This is when they become their most creative and built the most extreme car they can. No costs spared. Right of the start, the Trophy R looks a lot punchier than a standard Mégane. All 500 produced units are painted in white with some red bits here and there. Even though I do like them paying homage to the original Mégane R26. R with the spec, I do think that it looks like a matchbox car. Especially the wheels are a bit much because people will ultimately assume that you‘re a pretend racing driver, which actually is pretty accurate.

A car I liked for no apparent reason before and love it for many now. Even though it’s a car I didn‘t expect a lot from, it ended up delivering more than I hoped for. A lot more. First off, I really like the way it looks, which is weird as I generally hate all those small SUV-Crossover hatchback. The T-Roc however just works for me. Clean and sporty lines paired with a lovely deep blue and phenomenal sporty rims, make it look fabulous. Another element which makes the car look phenomenal are the massive exhaust pipes bearing the lettering you want to see on any car. Akrapovic. But more on that later.

Hyundai i30 Fastback N

In recent years, car manufacturers all around the world have started to alter their product portfolio by restyling their hatchbacks into some sort of five door coupé and selling it as a more elegant and sporty alternative to the sort of people who have absolutely no clue what they are doing in their life. The Mercedes CLA, the Audi A3 Saloon and the new BMW 2 Series are just some of the most prominent examples that come into mind. When seeing these cars I always ask myself: “why?”. Why would someone design let alone buy something like this? I mean, I can’t see a single reason for it.

The A110 has been around for quite a while now, and if you don‘t live under a rock you‘ll probably know that everyone who had a go in it thinks that it’s rather brilliant. But do I? Spoiler: Absolutely!

I’ve always been fascinated by the original A110. Small, fast, a lot of heritage and huge amounts of character. When I heard that Renault was going to do a modern reinterpretation of the A110, I couldn’t await to see what they’d come up with.

Well the French. Love them or hate them. Either way there are some things they just do better than the rest of the world. When it comes to cooking, they are known for having some of the finest food and most highly rated chefs. Their electronic music is one of the best you can find and they are undoubtedly the fastest when it comes to putting on a yellow vest and break things which are not theirs.

Basel. Home of Switzerland’s pharmaceutical industry and birthplace of the world's greatest tennis player. A rather calm and charming city. BMW 135i M

I planned on writing a review about this car for quite some time now. But being rather lazy these days, I never really got to it. With the more or less “recent“ reveal of the new 1 Series it’s about time to look back the best 1 Series Hatchback there has ever been. At least that‘s what I think.

The 135i M (in fact this very car) holds a special place in my heart. Mainly because I had my first memorable experience of a „quick“ car in it and secondly because I‘m lucky enough to spend quite some time in the passenger seat, as the car belongs to a good friend.
